CAT INDOOR ONLY ADOPTION POLICY

All cats adopted from Out of the Woods Rescue Melbourne Ltd (OOTW) must be kept indoors only for the remainder of their lives. This policy is in place to protect both the cat and the environment, and it forms a condition of our adoption agreement.

Why we require indoor-only adoptions

  • Safety from injury and death: outdoor environments expose cats to risks such as road traffic, attacks from dogs or other animals, poisoning and accidents
  • Disease prevention: outdoor cats are at higher risk of contracting diseases such as FIV, FeLV, and parasites like fleas, ticks, and worms, which can be passed to other animals in care
  • Biosecurity and quarantine: many of our foster cats are in quarantine or have unknown health histories. Keeping them indoors is essential for controlling disease spread within the foster network
  • Local wildlife protection: cats are natural hunters and pose a significant threat to native wildlife, especially birds, reptiles and small mammals
  • Reduced risk of loss or theft: cats allowed to roam are at a higher risk of getting lost, stolen, or taken to pounds/shelters as strays
  • Legal & community considerations: in some councils, laws exist or are being introduced to restrict cats from roaming due to the risks they pose to wildlife and property.

Acceptable outdoor access

We understand that some adopters may want their cats to enjoy the outdoors safely. The following are permitted under our indoor-only policy:

  • Catios or enclosed outdoor runs: fully secure enclosures where the cat cannot escape or interact with other animals. Prospective adopters will be asked to provide photos of their secure outdoor enclosures during their initial application to adopt.
  • Harness Training: cats may be taken outdoors using a harness and leash, under direct supervision.

Adoption policy

At OOTW, we only adopt to homes where cats will be kept indoors or provided with secure outdoor access as described above. If, during the adoption process, we do not feel confident that an adopter will adhere to this policy, we reserve the right to decline the adoption application.

Our rationale

Our indoor-only policy is not about restricting cats from finding homes, but about protecting them. Studies have shown that indoor cats live healthier, longer lives, are less exposed to harm, and contribute to the protection of Australia’s unique and fragile wildlife. Keeping cats indoors also helps adopters avoid costly vet bills, traumatic injuries, and the heartbreak of losing a pet to preventable dangers.

We believe that responsible pet ownership includes creating a stimulating indoor environment for cats, with enrichment, play, and safe outdoor experiences when possible. Our goal is to ensure that every cat adopted from OOTW thrives in a safe, loving, and protected home.
