Our commitment

At Out of the Woods Rescue Melbourne Ltd (OOTW), our focus is on placing animals into loving, permanent homes. However, we recognise that sometimes adoptions may not work out. This policy outlines our approach to returns and refunds in a way that prioritises animal welfare while supporting responsible decision-making by adopters.

Returns

If you are unable to continue caring for your adopted animal, they must be returned to OOTW.

Rehoming privately or through third parties is not permitted, as outlined in our adoption agreement.

We will accept the return of adopted animals at any time post-adoption, but ask that you provide as much notice as possible so that we can arrange suitable foster care. All returns must be arranged directly with OOTW.

Refunds

Our refund policy is designed to balance fairness to adopters with the costs involved in rehoming animals.

Within 7 Days of Adoption: If the animal is returned within 7 days, you are eligible for a 75% refund of the adoption fee. The retained 25% covers administrative costs associated with processing the adoption and return (including microchip transfer fee back to rescues ownership).

After 7 Days: Returns made after 7 days are not eligible for a refund.

Refunds will be processed only once the animal has been safely returned to OOTW, and may take up to 10 business days to be finalised.

Important notes

• Adopters are encouraged to contact OOTW for support before deciding to return the animal. We can offer guidance and support on helping your new pet settle in or addressing specific concerns.
• No trial period is offered. We expect adopters to make a thoughtful, long-term commitment when applying to adopt.
• Adoption fees help cover essential veterinary care (desexing, microchipping, vaccinations) and support ongoing rescue efforts.

Legal and ethical compliance

As a registered Community Foster Care Network (CFCN), OOTW complies with all relevant legislation, including the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and guidelines set by Agriculture Victoria. Our return and refund policy ensures compliance with these standards while protecting animal welfare.
